The Mega Million is a lottery whose tickets can be purchased all over the United States (except for five states). Before each drawing, the jackpot is calculated by evaluating public interest and ticket sales. And, if nobody gets lucky enough to win the jackpot, it gets higher and more alluring for the next drawing.
On March 30, 2012, Mega Millions made history when a $656 million lottery jackpot was awarded. After that, two Powerball lotteries have made history by creating new records, with a $1,586.4 billion prize awarded in 2016 and a $758.7 million prize awarded in 2017.
Mega Millions Lottery History
In 1996, the lottery was called “The Big Game” at launch. At the beginning of the Big Game, only five states participated. However, as it grew in popularity, more and more states joined.
The jackpot game made changes to its structure in 2017, making it easier to win the million-dollar prize but more challenging to win the Big Jackpot.
The changes also included a rise in the prices of tickets from $1 to $2, a drop in the amount of white-colored balls, and to select the Mega Ball from 25 numbers, instead of 15.
How Do You Play & Win The Mega Millions?
- Pick five numbers in any order, between one and 70.
- Pick one more number, known as the “Mega Ball,” from anywhere between one and 25.
Similar to the Powerball lottery, mega balls have different colors. The balls numbered from one to 70 are colored white, and the Mega Ball is colored golden. A basic Mega Ball ticket costs $2, though many states offer an optional “Megaplier,” allowing you to pay $1 more for one ticket. A Megaplier win multiplies any prize (except for the Jackpot) by two, three, four, or five.
You can choose your lottery number by yourself, or you can allow the computer to generate the numbers for you. This is called the “Quick Pick” option.
The lucky numbers are brought out from two drums, which are filled with the balls. The first drum includes 70 balls, from which five balls are pulled out. The Mega Ball is selected from the second drum that contains 25 balls. The seventh number is drawn, which acts as the decider of the level of Megaplier, extending from two to five times the prize money.
If the lucky five numbers which were drawn from the drum match your five numbers and the Mega ball is drawn from the second drum also matches your golden ball, you are the jackpot winner.
You can buy tickets for the game up to 15 minutes prior to every Mega Millions event on Tuesdays and Fridays at 11:00 PM ET.
The winning numbers are broadcast on TV, printed in newspapers, and posted on the Mega Millions website.
